We use Adobe After Effects as our video editing software of choice, from our training videos to short gifs on social media. It allows our video presentations to be clean, professional, and engaging. We've also used it to produce stills for background images. It is our plan to increase our usage of this software over the next few years, as we develop more video content for both our curricula and social media presence.

  • The newest version of AE no longer has a scroll bar at the bottom of the timeline, this makes it really hard to stay zoomed in and move through a project slowly.
As long as your machine and graphics card are up to running AE it's great for all video editing. The ability to implement effects, cameras, etc at any point in your project makes it a great tool.

The chroma key feature is really nice for explainer videos and times when you'd like to animate graphics on screen in front of or behind an actor/instructor.

  • Being able to produce professional quality video is crucial for customer buy in and presentation.
Adobe customer support is wonderful. They genuinely care about their product and the end user experience. The products they create have always been innovative and continue to improve. They have a huge chunk of the user market in their field and still strive to improve. This is such a big deal for me and other small business/organizations that need their products and don't have a large voice on our own.
I did not purchase any additional or premium support for our organization's Adobe products. The support staff at the standard level is excellent. I feel like any issues we've ever had (and they are never major and are always resolved quickly) have been handled with care and enthusiasm towards a combined goal, rather than the us vs you approach some subscription companies can have.
No
We had questions about educational vs nonprofit pricing. A real human emailed and then called me on the phone to follow up and ensure that we had the answers we were looking for. They also provided their direct contact information in order to resolve any further questions that may have arisen later. The personal care was above my expectations.

We use Adobe After Effects primarily to design short animations for marketing email. After Effects is the best solution for this since we can design the assets in other Adobe programs such as Photoshop, XD and illustrator. Additionally, we use After Effects to create online display ads and even short (one minute or less) videos for broadcast.
  • After Effects is great for creating motion content once and easily exporting it to various formats such as web, broadcast, GIF, etc.
  • After Effects is the industry standard for motion graphics. While I’m an Apple user and have used Motion in the past it is not as feature rich and most clients will expect you to use After Effects.
  • After Effects is great for complex UI animation. Tools like principle and Flinto are great but are quite cumbersome for complex UI animations.
  • Developer handoff. Competing UI design tools allow designers to share CSS and C+/Swift code for developers to recreate animations. After Effects requires third party plugins to do so.
  • Functions like GIF export have been removed and moved to Media Encoder. Media Encoder can be launched directly from After Effects but the reasoning behind the decision is unclear. Similar features have not been removed and it creates a unneeded learning curve for new users.
  • Resizing is done form the center of an object where as CSS always originates from top left. By not being able to toggle the origin point the user has to do a lot of math on their end.
After Effects is the best tool for motion graphics due to it’s tight integration with the rest of the Adobe Creative Suite. It should be your go to for film and video. I use the tool primarily for web animation and UI mock-up and it works great in most instances but requires the user to have a good understanding of the requirements of designing for the web. Also, After Effects is a resource hog. It’s highly CPU dependent and ram dependant if you want to do lots of previews. Its inclusion in the Creative Cloud subscription is great. If you are an Adobe PhotoShop/Illustrator user your most likely already paying for it.
  • Motion Design
  • GIF export
  • UI mockup
  • It’s included in our Adobe CC subscription so it really cost us nothing since we need Photoshop and Illustrator to do our jobs.
  • Clients cleft rich animation. After Effects allows us to deliver and bill appropriately.
  • Experienced users can create outstanding animation that “looks” expensive and bill appropiately.
We use these tools in conjunction with After Effects not as a replacement. Apple Motion does many of the same things as After Effects and in some ways is more intuitive. However, After Effects is bundled with software we absolutely must use and is the industry standard. New hires are more likely to have After Effects experience than competing platforms which is a no brainer. It really is the industry standard.

In our higher education institution, Adobe After Effects is primarily used by creative units around campus, primarily by marketing professionals and instructional media producers. It allows for these roles to create high-fidelity, professional animations, and graphics for use in a variety of deliverable formats. The complexity and depth of After Effects require training and a high degree of comfort/familiarity with the program to ensure that the user is able to create what they want. As such, its usage across the institution is limited.
  • If you can dream it, you can probably create it in After Effects. With a host of features, 3rd-party plugins, and a high degree of customizability, After Effects is an agile platform for video/graphic compositing.
  • After Effects integrates well with other Adobe products such as Premiere Pro. If you make an edit in one, it reflects in the other without having to render out a full project. This is a huge time saver.
  • After Effects has served as the industry standard for many years now, which means there is a plethora of resources online and in print to help new (and current!) users locate information when they need it.
  • At first blush, After Effects' UI is overwhelming. Even after a decade of using it, I still get lost at times.
  • While the base-level product is fine for a lot of basic projects, anything with any kind of complexity is going to require 3rd-party plugins which can be rather expensive.
  • While this is not specific to After Effects, it is unfortunate that all of Adobe's products in the Creative Suite require the user to maintain a subscription. Subscription-based models benefit the company, not the user.
Adobe After Effects is best used when the producer is creating graphics/effects used in video composition. For example, creating graphics or video overlays falls right in its wheelhouse. And while it can technically serve as a non-linear editing platform (such as Premiere Pro), this is not its strength. I have seen people try to use it this way and it always leads to more headaches and frustration in the long run.
  • Highly customizable and powerful engine for composition
  • Easy to use integration with other Adobe products (such as Premiere Pro)
  • Strong community of help around the product in form of tutorials, walkthroughs, etc.
  • Using Adobe After Effects's built-in collaborative and library tools, we are able to save time/money when onboarding new producers to get them up and running quickly.

We use After Effects to deal with the different types of animations like Explainer videos, 2D animation, we create educational videos in complete animation for YouTube and with help of After Effects our work becomes so productive and fast, so that we can expand our business. Working with animation on After Effects is really very powerful and effective. it provides high quality output for our work, you can work on professional projects with help of Adobe After Effects. It is really impressive industry-standard software. We are also using After Effects for video editing and VFX, it can handle both of them very well.
  • 2d animation, it can handle the 2d animation on more than 60+ fps. it is easy to work with character animation. you can add various plugins, it has a strong interface to work on, so it almost each and every type of animation related work mainly in 2d.
  • vfx- we can integrate after effects with various softwares like Cinema 4D to create amazing vfx scenes.
  • video editing- we can do professional video editing along with some really impressive motion graphic and object tracking.
  • 3D - working with 3D in After Effects doesn't provide that much effective results as compared to 3D software, we can only do basic 3D or we have to integrate 3D software.
  • Sometimes when it comes to real-time preview of the scene (what you created) even if you have better specs, you will face some lags.
  • Audio - After Effects doesn't provide any effective tool to work with audio, they should provide something which can be helpful to remove audio noise, but there is no effective tool to work with audio in After Effects (you can work with Adobe Audition to do that but that's a different software).
Well suited when you are working to create YouTube videos in a real and effective manner in less time. It has been really helpful for me in the last year, we have produced 60+ animated videos which is really amazing speed to work. And the best thing is it gives professional output and saves time. Really simple to work if you know how to do it. If you are looking for a video editor you can do it on After Effects also.
The scenarios where it becomes less appropriate is when you are working on 3D animation, you can get better things except VFX.
  • It helped us to improve our productivity.
  • It gives us freedom to take on more projects as it is really amazing to handle work faster than other tools or programs.
  • We need to slightly raise our budget but it ultimately helped us, so there is no negative impact on our business, we are better and more professional now.
  • Adobe Animate (formerly Flash)
We have taken After Effects because Adobe Animate is completely focused on animation rather than other things which After Effects can handle very easily, like we needed a program which can handle the professional animation, speed up our workflow, and can do various things like edit a video with text and some VFX, can add various VFX into finished projects, can do post-production, so that's why we have selected After Effects.
They are really good and whenever you get stuck in any problem they can provide various study materials and tutorials, and if there are any bugs they will inform you so, that's a very good thing about Adobe customer support.
